Snorty, Round, Completely Irresistible
Puggy is a name that makes people smile before they even meet the dog. It's openly affectionate — a diminutive that doesn't pretend to be anything other than what it is: a little name for a lot of personality. The -y ending transforms an already endearing word into something even softer, like the sonic equivalent of a belly rub.
Functionally, Puggy is excellent. Two syllables with a hard stop and a bright vowel ending — dogs respond well to this phonetic shape. It's distinct from most other pet names, which means less confusion in multi-pet households. You can call Puggy across a room and nobody else's dog is going to look up.
The Name Is Bigger Than the Breed
The obvious match is a Pug — and yes, a Pug named Puggy is delightfully on-brand, leaning into the breed identity rather than away from it. Owners who embrace this are usually the same people who put their Pug in a bow tie for photos, which is the correct energy.
But Puggy works beyond Pugs. Any compact, round-faced dog with a comedic self-presentation earns this name: French Bulldogs, Boston Terriers, Shih Tzus. Even Corgis, who have that same combination of stubby earnestness and surprising confidence.
I named my rabbit Money partly for the same reason people name round little creatures something playfully grand — Puggy operates on similar logic, just leaning into charm rather than grandeur.
- Best fit: Pugs, French Bulldogs, Boston Terriers
- Personality match: Charming, funny, completely unashamed
