Prometheus is a boy's baby name of Greek origin, from the Greek Prometheus, composed of pro (before) and methos (thought, wisdom), meaning 'forethought' or 'one who thinks ahead' — the Titan who stole fire from the gods and gave it to humanity.
Prometheus is the most audaciously mythological of all names — the Titan who defied Zeus to give humans the gift of fire (and thus civilization), and who was punished by being chained to a rock where an eagle daily consumed his regenerating liver. The Romantic poets made Prometheus the symbol of noble rebellion against unjust authority — Percy Shelley's Prometheus Unbound and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (subtitled 'The Modern Prometheus') represent this tradition.
