Meaning & Origin
A female given name from the Germanic languages.
Bertha is a girl's and boy's baby name of Germanic origin, from the Old High German Berahta, meaning "bright" or "famous" — from beraht ("bright, shining"). Saint Bertha of Kent, the 6th-century Frankish queen who helped bring Christianity to England, was an early notable bearer.
Bertha was a U.S. top-10 girls' name in the 1880s and 1890s. "Big Bertha," the World War I German artillery piece, gave the name an undeserved association with massive force — which may have contributed to its decline. The Grateful Dead's song "Playing in the Band" features a Bertha. It's perhaps the ultimate reclaim name for a certain kind of fearless parent.
